Von Baer full grain leather messenger bags are handcrafted in Florence and Northern Italy from Italian Cuoio Superiore certified vegetable-tanned full-grain cow leather. Our Tuscan tanneries have been producing the leather the same way since 1961. Our family-owned studios cut and stitch every bag across generations of technique. Every bag in this collection uses the same grade and the same origin.

• Cuoio Superiore Certified Full-Grain Leather: Our leather is Cuoio Superiore certified, an independent Italian standard that audits hide origin, tanning method and finishing oils on-site at participating tanneries. We chose 48 to 72 hour plant-based vegetable-tanning, using quebracho, mimosa and chestnut tannins, over the industry-typical 8-hour chrome-tanning. Our slower process bonds tannins deeper with the collagen fibers, so the leather builds a patina with use rather than peeling at the stitched edges. Every bag in this collection uses the same leather grade, regardless of size or closure.
• Solid Brass Hardware, Italian Workshops: Every bag in this range carries solid brass hardware throughout: buckles, rivets, locks, zipper pulls and the protective metal feet on the underside. We rejected plated zinc alloy because it tarnishes, flakes at the joints and can snap under a heavy laptop load. We picked brass because it outlasts the leather. Our zippers are YKK with brass pulls, paired across the range.
• Fine Italian Cotton Canvas Lining: Our lining is fine Italian cotton canvas, a natural alternative to the polyester and microfiber that most online leather brands substitute at this price tier. We picked cotton because it's soft, breathable and sustainable, like the leather itself. We didn't want the part of the bag you touch every time you open it to feel synthetic.
• 5-Year Repair Warranty, Duties Absorbed Worldwide: Every bag in this range ships with a 5-Year Limited Warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship under normal use. Our warranty is repair at no charge, not replacement. We absorb all applicable duties and taxes globally, so there's no customs surprise at the door.
