Benefits
Before we get into the benefits of an RFID wallet, let’s make sure we have a good grasp of what RFID is. RFID is “Radio Frequency Identification,” and it is the technology that allows us to make contactless payments, pass through security checks using card and phone taps, and similar functions.
Sophisticated thieves have started to use this technology to access card data when the cardholder is unaware of it. They use scanners with enough range to get this information from a few feet away, and can do so without touching you or your wallet… if you have a standard, non-RFID-blocking wallet. This is called “RFID skimming,” and is growing in popularity amongst thieves and organized crime.
Key Benefits
The leather used in the wallet’s construction is durable, beautiful, functional, and brings with it a style and status achieved by no other material – but on its own it is unable to shield you from RFID-based attacks. For this reason, the addition of a layer of RFID-blocking material puts a barrier between your cards and the devices the thieves use to access your data.
Why Should You Care About Security?
Without RFID protection, you could be walking down a street, through a lobby or busy subway station, or even grabbing a coffee at your favorite coffee shop, when a thief uses RFID to access your data.
You won’t know it has been done.
The thief can then begin to make purchases, take out loans, open memberships, and take money directly from your accounts.
By the time you know this is happening, you could be facing credit rating damage, debt collectors, and empty bank accounts. This is what happens, and it is happening more and more as time goes on, because it works. It is very profitable and low risk to thieves. Damaging and high risk to you.
Contrast this with having an RFID-blocking wallet. You are in one of those same situations, with the same cards, money, financial situation and lifestyle. The thief targets you with an RFID scanner… and gets nothing.
As far as they know, you aren’t even carrying a wallet. You go on with your life and they go on with theirs. You aren’t facing any loss of money, credit rating or reputation, and you avoid the stress, violation, and hassle of having to deal with the aftermath of a sophisticated theft. In fact, you never even know you were a target.
That’s the peace of mind RFID blocking brings with it.
How to Choose
The place to start is by filtering your search my including RFID-blocking features. All of the Von Baer wallets above have RFID blocking features.
The Significance of Leather
Leather is not only one of the best materials for wallets in general, but it also works well with RFID-blocking material layers.
Full grain leather is considered the top of the line, because it is the thickest and most durable. It has the added benefit of a fine exterior grain and the ability to develop a beautiful patina over time, making it unique and even more beautiful as it ages.
Top grain leather is the next step down. It is a little thinner and therefore less durable, but it can take bright dyes better, so it is often used for leather items finished in bright hues such as red, white, blue, green, etc.
For classic browns and blacks, full grain is the best.
Avoid “genuine leather” and other bonded leather types, as they will not hold up well.
Prioritizing Wallet Design and Functionality
You will want to look for wallets that hold the number of cards you need to carry with you, but the smaller the wallet, the more comfortable it will be to carry. Balance features with size and you will get the most usability and pleasure from your wallet.
Security: Why RFID Protection Matters
As we advised above, try to filter for RFID wallets at the beginning, but also don’t forget to make sure before setting your heart on a particular design. Buying a wallet without RFID-blocking, in this day and age, is like buying and living in a house that has no locks. No matter how nice it looks, it will not protect you or your wealth and identity.
Assessing Craftsmanship and Durability
The wallet should be constructed with tight, regular stitching. You shouldn’t see threads hanging out, blobs of glue anywhere, or ragged cuts in the leather. Everything should be tight, neat, and overall, it should look like a thing of beauty that will last.
Tailoring to Your Style
Your wallet should complement your existing wardrobe and even elevate it. Imagine the wardrobe you are hoping to build: does the wallet fit with it? If so, it is a great place to start, or to continue on your journey toward the wardrobe of your dreams.
Types
Bifold RFID Leather Wallets
The bifold wallet is the most common and popular style, probably because it is a great balance between capacity and size. It has a single fold in the middle, creating two flaps for card slots, and often includes a cash pocket. Typical capacity is six to eight cards.
Trifold RFID Leather Wallets
The trifold adds an additional three to four cards to the bifold design, by elongating the wallet by a third, and having two folds (three flaps) for cards. Trifolds are a little thicker, but still fit well in most pockets, and for the person with a lot of cards to carry, they are a great match.
Travel RFID Leather Wallets
If your wallet needs include something that will hold a passport and the larger bills of foreign currency, then a travel wallet is a great choice. These are a bit larger, of course, but they keep key documents and cards in one easy-to-manage place for better security and quick access when needed.
Slim RFID Leather Wallets and Card Holders
If you don’t carry many cards, you can go for a slim wallet that fits more easily in the pocket, weighs less, and still offers all of the security, durability, and style of its larger cousins. Great for minimalist lifestyles, of simple for the person who doesn’t need to carry so much around with them.
FAQs
How Does RFID Protection in Wallets Work?
When thieves use RFID technology to “skim” your wallet for data – which they can do without touching you or your wallet – the RFID-blocking technology reflects the signal, thwarting their attempts to steal from you.
Are There Downsides to Using an RFID?
These wallets may be slightly heavier and thicker, due to the additional layer of RFID-blocking material. In most cases, this is minor.
Also, developments in the sophistication of thieves can mean high-powered versions of RFID scanners that can potentially get through standard RFID-blocking technology, mean that RFID protection is not 100% effective all of the time.
Can RFID Interfere with Card Functionality?
No. When you want to use your cards, simply open the wallet and use them. The RFID-blocking technology is designed to operate wen the wallet is closed.
