FAQs
What is the best leather to use for bags?
When it comes to bags, full grain leather is the best quality, which is why it’s commonly used. It’s from the most hard wearing section of the animal hide and it has a natural texture, which is ideal for creating beautiful bags.
One of the great things about full grain leather is that it develops a soft sheen as it ages. This creates a unique finish.
Where in the world are the best leather bags from?
There are a lot of countries that make leather bags, but the best can be found in Italy. Italy is home to a lot of skilled craftsmen, and it’s hard for any other country to match what Italians are capable of making.
Italy uses high quality hides, skilled workers and a unique dye making process.
Are leather bags worth the cost?
Leather bags are usually more expensive than bags made using any other type of material, but they are worth it. You should see leather as an investment, as the bag really can last a lifetime.
Instead of looking old and worn, a leather bag actually looks better the more you use it. If you take care of a leather bag properly, there is no reason as to why it won’t last for many, many years.
How do you determine real leather from fake leather?
There are a lot of fake leather bags out there, but real leather is relatively easy to spot. Real leather should have a somewhat grainy feel; it should be supple and flexible.
Real leather can be stretched, but it’s rare for fake leather to have the same movement. Real leather feels warm to the touch and it should have an oaky scent, whereas fake leather has neither of these qualities.
How long does real leather last for?
A real leather purse or bag can last for many, many years and some craftsmen claim that their work can last for decades. This is because real leather has a natural durability that fake leather and other synthetic materials lack.

Von Baer was founded because I wanted a unique and high-quality laptop bag for myself, without paying for an unreasonably overpriced designer brand. I've spent over 500 hours testing 1,000s of leather products over to help you get a better product.
I'm proud of the luxurious leather goods we've created since 2014, and I'm sure you'll love them too. Read more about our story here.

How Is Von Baer Leather Different?
Not all leather is the same.
Since 2015, we at Von Baer have dedicated ourselves to high-quality real leather.
Here's a 30-second summary of how to choose a better leather product:
- Leather comes in different grades: full-grain, top-grain, and split/bonded - which represent how much of the original product is used (less product used = cheaper).
- Full-grain is the best grade of leather you can buy: exceptionally durable, developing an elegant patina, and having that beautiful real leather smell.
- Cheaper grades are less durable, age poorly, and don't have that authentic scent.
- Leather is processed through "tanning", which makes it durable and water-resistant.
- The two main methods for this are "vegetable-tanning" and "chrome-tanning".
- Chrome tanning uses harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and produce a worse quality leather.
- Vegetable tanning is the best method, being more eco-friendly, and producing leather with a better patina and scent.
That's why here at Von Baer, we only use full-grain vegetable-tanned Italian leather, sourced from the finest tanneries across Tuscany, Italy.
It ages beautifully over time, developing a unique patina, making it more durable and luxurious than lower-quality leather.
It's also why we developed the leather standards trademark Cuoio Superiore (meaning "superior leather" in Italian).
