Benefits
Durability and Quality
Quality duffel bags are just as durable and hardy as they’ve always been, with premium materials like high-grade nylon and genuine leather, high-performance threads and hardware, and designs that make chic look casual and effortless.
The structure of the bags lasts, inside and out, even after years or decades of use. The appearance, too, is durable, and with proper care, a leather bag can look even better when it’s twenty than it did when it was new… and it looked great then!
Functionality and Versatility
Overnight duffel bags were originally made with only function in mind, and they’ve retained that high level of utility. Easy to pack and unpack, easy to carry, and stow, and always keeping the contents safe from loss, from weather, from spills and other damage – they are powerhouses of practicality. They can be used as carry-on luggage, a general weekender bag, or a trip to the gym before work.
That, together with their effortless style, makes them a valuable tool in a wide range of situations, from romantic weekends away to business trips – a truly versatile bit of kit that nonetheless looks fantastic.
Style and Status
A designer duffel elevates the whole game. It is a symbol of status and style, an understated signal that power, success, and confidence has just entered the room. Elevating casual clothing and complementing more formal looks, the duffel marks the owner as a person worth watching.
Customization Options
Von Baer offers personalization for all of our bags, meaning you can get a laser engraved message, initials, or an image.
How to Choose
Choosing a luxury bag can be a confusing process, or an exciting and enjoyable one, depending on how you go about it. To ensure that your experience is the latter, we’ve put together some tips and considerations to help you identify your own needs and preferences and which bag might best fit them.
Purpose
First, consider the way you want to use the bag. In order to know which bag suits you best, you’ll need to know what it is meant to do. Is it for business? Pleasure? Both? A weekender duffle bag, or something for longer trips?
Materials
Most duffels are made of high-grade nylon, or leather. Nylon will be lighter and can be easier to clean in some cases, whereas leather tends to be more luxurious, and can offer more shock protection to items inside the bag.
Size
You will likely want to have a bag that fits into the overhead compartments of most airplanes, but you’ll also want to make sure you can carry all you need in it, so it will have to be big enough too – or you’ll need a second bag.
Cost vs. Quality
Designer bags are more expensive than no-name offerings. This is because the name brings some prestige with it, yes, but it is also because the brand earned that prestige. These designer items not only retain their value better, but many of them actually increase in value as they become collector’s items.
Choose one that you think might become popular, if resale is part of your buying strategy.
Versatility and Timelessness
Look for designs that would have looked stunning ten years ago and will likely look stunning ten from now. These timeless designs allow you to use your bag for years, or even decades, of stylish travel. Trends and fads will not only fade away quickly, but they’ll usually take the value of a trendy bag away with them.
Real-World Usage Scenarios
Imagine how you will use the bag. Now imagine what items that usage will require. For example, if you go to the gym, will your clothing and any necessary equipment fit in the bag? If you are off for a romantic weekend in the mountains, can you pack everything you need? Choose a bag with the size and features your real-world scenarios will need.
Co-Founder: Albert Varkki
Von Baer was founded because I wanted a unique and high-quality laptop bag for myself, without paying for an unreasonably overpriced designer brand. I've spent over 500 hours testing 1,000s of leather products over to help you get a better product.
I'm proud of the luxurious leather goods we've created since 2014, and I'm sure you'll love them too. Read more about our story here.
We strive for the highest editorial standards, and to only publish accurate information on our website.
How Is Von Baer Leather Different?
Not all leather is the same.
Since 2015, we at Von Baer have dedicated ourselves to high-quality real leather.
Here's a 30-second summary of how to choose a better leather product:
- Leather comes in different grades: full-grain, top-grain, and split/bonded - which represent how much of the original product is used (less product used = cheaper).
- Full-grain is the best grade of leather you can buy: exceptionally durable, developing an elegant patina, and having that beautiful real leather smell.
- Cheaper grades are less durable, age poorly, and don't have that authentic scent.
- Leather is processed through "tanning", which makes it durable and water-resistant.
- The two main methods for this are "vegetable-tanning" and "chrome-tanning".
- Chrome tanning uses harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and produce a worse quality leather.
- Vegetable tanning is the best method, being more eco-friendly, and producing leather with a better patina and scent.
That's why here at Von Baer, we only use full-grain vegetable-tanned Italian leather, sourced from the finest tanneries across Tuscany, Italy.
It ages beautifully over time, developing a unique patina, making it more durable and luxurious than lower-quality leather.
It's also why we developed the leather standards trademark Cuoio Superiore (meaning "superior leather" in Italian).
