What Makes a Good Groomsmen Bag?
A good groomsmen bag will be useful and desirable, and one that your friends will want to use in their daily lives. There's no point in giving them a low quality bag that's going to be stored somewhere in a cupboard and not used.
Opt for one that's stylish, for example made from full grain leather, as they're more likely to use it for work or the gym.
Key Features of a Duffle Bag
You will have no choice but to carry your duffel bag if it doesn’t roll. This means it will need to be comfortable enough to carry. The duffel you look for should be lightweight and come with padded straps. It should offer various carrying options.
It’s common for duffels to have detachable and adjustable shoulder straps that ensure the bag is the right length for you. If you don’t want to carry the bag by hand or over one shoulder, look for a convertible one with backpack straps. It might help to look for a bag that weighs under three pounds.
Compartments & Organization
Some duffels only have one compartment. However, others have dividers and several pockets. If you’re going to use your bag for travel purposes, seek out a bag that has a laptop sleeve alongside compartments for your keys, wallet, and devices like chargers.
If you’re the kind of person who likes to take impulse trips, it may be best to purchase a bag that you can quickly throw all your belongings into. Perhaps you’re eager to keep dirty garments away from clean ones? Then purchase a bag that has interior dividers.
Durable Materials
Unless you’re happy for your bag to last a very short time period, it’s best to opt for something manufactured from tough materials. Most bags made from materials like polyester, vinyl, and nylon are waterproof and therefore protected from the elements.
Canvas and leather bags aren’t water resistant, but these materials are strong and thick enough to keep concerns about rips and tears to a minimum.
FAQs
Can I use a duffel bag as carry-on luggage?
A duffel bag can work as carry-on luggage if you are happy to carry your bag over your shoulder whilst making your way through the airport. You will have to ensure the bag meets the general FAA guidelines of 45 linear inches, or 22 x 14 x 9 inches.
Another good reason for using a duffel bag as carry-on luggage is that it should come with various handles and straps that will make it easy for you to get it into and retrieve it from an overhead compartment.
Nonetheless, many prefer to use bags that roll behind them as carry-on luggage to enhance comfort.
What is the right bag size?
If you are carrying your duffel bag on a plane, ensure it meets the airline’s requirements. 40 liters is normally enough for a weekend away. If you are going on a longer trip or are a heavy packer, you may wish to purchase one that’s at least 50 liters. Many models come in multiple sizes.
What are the most important features to consider?
When you want to buy a duffel bag, think carefully about your travel style as well as your bag requirements. Take a close look at the size, capacity, and organizational components of any bag you’re buying to ensure it’s right for you.
If you'll be using your bag during a camping trip or something similar, look for water-resistant or waterproof materials. Think carefully about the shape and design of the bag to ensure it’s a good match for any situation you’ll be using it in too.

How Is Von Baer Leather Different?
Not all leather is the same.
Since 2015, we at Von Baer have dedicated ourselves to high-quality real leather.
Here's a 30-second summary of how to choose a better leather product:
- Leather comes in different grades: full-grain, top-grain, and split/bonded - which represent how much of the original product is used (less product used = cheaper).
- Full-grain is the best grade of leather you can buy: exceptionally durable, developing an elegant patina, and having that beautiful real leather smell.
- Cheaper grades are less durable, age poorly, and don't have that authentic scent.
- Leather is processed through "tanning", which makes it durable and water-resistant.
- The two main methods for this are "vegetable-tanning" and "chrome-tanning".
- Chrome tanning uses harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and produce a worse quality leather.
- Vegetable tanning is the best method, being more eco-friendly, and producing leather with a better patina and scent.
That's why here at Von Baer, we only use full-grain vegetable-tanned Italian leather, sourced from the finest tanneries across Tuscany, Italy.
It ages beautifully over time, developing a unique patina, making it more durable and luxurious than lower-quality leather.
It's also why we developed the leather standards trademark Cuoio Superiore (meaning "superior leather" in Italian).
