You came here for a leather weekend bag that does the work of two: it carries a couple of days of clothes, takes your laptop and still slides into the overhead bin, so you keep it with you at the gate instead of watching it disappear down the hold. Every bag in this range is built to that cabin size, in full-grain Italian leather that ages into a patina instead of scuffing gray and peeling at the corners. Browse our full leather weekender range to see them together.
There is no logo on the front of a Von Baer bag. The only mark is the one you choose, blind embossed by hand into the leather luggage tag that comes with it.
Why these weekend getaway bags belong in the overhead bin
A weekend getaway bag has to survive the trip, not just look good in a product shot. These are built for the places travel bags usually fail first: the gate check that pulls you out of line, the loaded handle that stretches and gives, the coated corner that looks tired after a year.
- It clears the overhead bin, so you are never the one waved over to gate-check at the door. The weekenders and garment bags are made to the cabin limit, 55 cm (21.65 in) across, so they go up into the bin instead of down to the hold. You keep your bag, your laptop and your suit with you, and you walk off the plane and straight out. Our guide to what counts as a carry-on covers the cabin size rules.
- It is full-grain Italian leather that ages into a patina instead of peeling at the corners. Full-grain is the top grade, the outer layer of the hide with its grain left on, so it takes years of handling and looks better for it. That is the opposite of the coated split leather that cracks and flakes at the folds within a season, the kind you have probably been burned by once. Inside, the lining is natural cotton canvas, not the plastic-feeling polyester most bags hide in there, so it stays soft against your shirts and does not scratch what you pack.
- There is no logo on the front, just your initials on the tag if you want them. No logo plate, no metal nameplate, no wordmark stamped across the side. What you see is the leather, not a label. If you want a mark on it, it is yours: we hand-emboss up to four initials into the leather luggage tag that comes with every bag, complimentary. Most leather houses charge for that, and put their own name where your initials could go.
- The handle and the zip, where most bags die, are the parts built to take the load. A travel bag almost always fails in the same two places: a handle that stretches and tears under a packed load, or a zip that splits and never runs clean again. So the handles are reinforced leather that carry the weight without stretching, the hand-carried bags sit on protective metal feet that keep the leather off wet gate floors, and the hardware and zips are chosen to keep running trip after trip. Every bag is backed by a 5-year warranty, which is how long we expect it to last.
Which weekend getaway bag fits the way you actually travel?
The bags come in four shapes, and which one is yours comes down to what you pack and how you like to carry it.
For the trip where a suit or a dress has to arrive ready to wear, the Grand Leather Garment Bag is the one to reach for. The bag unzips at both ends and opens flat, so the suit hangs on the included hanger inside; zip it back into a duffel and the suit curves around the inside instead of folding, so it arrives without the hard creases you would otherwise spend the first evening steaming out in a hotel bathroom. Zipped shut it carries like a normal weekend duffle for the rest of what you are bringing, so you take one bag to the wedding or the pitch, not two. The leather is Cuoio Superiore full-grain, vegetable-tanned slowly in Tuscany so it deepens in color the more you use it, and it is sized to stay in the overhead bin. There is a women's version of the same bag in the women's line. For the full tuxedo and black-tie selection, see our 2-in-1 garment carriers.
If you are packing a couple of days of clothes and want your laptop in the same bag, the Weekender is the classic open duffle. One wide main compartment swallows a weekend, a padded sleeve inside takes a 16-inch laptop, and a separate zipped pocket keeps your documents and charger where you can reach them at security. Carry it by the reinforced leather handles, or clip on the removable shoulder strap when your hands are full, and the metal feet on the base keep the leather off the floor when you set it down. Like the garment bag it is Cuoio Superiore full-grain leather that darkens and softens the more you travel with it. The women's Weekender carries the same way in a women's version. If you just want a soft duffle without the laptop sleeve, our soft leather duffles cover that.
When your shoulder is done carrying and you would rather roll, the Voyager is the only wheeled leather carry-on we make. Four spinner wheels turn it in any direction through a crowded terminal, the telescopic handle pulls up in two stages and tucks away flat when you lift it into the bin, and a padded compartment takes a 16-inch laptop for the flight. It is the heaviest bag in the range, because the wheels and frame are real, so it is the one to choose when you would rather roll than lift. Full-grain Italian leather, lined in natural cotton canvas, carry-on sized.
If a full weekend bag is more than you need, the Elegance Tote is the light way to travel for a single night or a day trip. It is the lightest bag here, around 1 kg (2.2 lb), open at the top so you reach straight in, with a padded sleeve inside for a 16-inch laptop and metal feet to keep the base off the floor. It is small enough to slide under the seat in front of you on the days you are traveling light, and it works just as well as your everyday bag between trips. Full-grain Italian leather, with a cotton lining.

If none of these is quite the shape you are after, a few neighboring collections might be closer:
- Women's Designer Weekender Bags gathers the women's-line weekenders and garment bags in one place.
- Leather Travel Bags is the wider range for when you have outgrown a carry-on and need something larger.
- Men's Work Backpacks is where to look if you would rather carry a structured leather backpack than a hand-carried duffle.
If you are still weighing which bag suits the way you travel, there is a guide to choosing a travel bag that goes through it properly. If you often travel in a suit, there is a piece on the bags that pair with formalwear. And if it has to be black, we put the black weekenders side by side.
Whichever one fits, what you see on the page is what you pay. We never inflate a price to mark it back down later, and US delivery includes duties and taxes.
If it is a gift, the only mark on it is the recipient's initials, not a brand's, embossed by hand into the luggage tag, complimentary.
How Is Von Baer Leather Different?
Not all leather is the same.
Since 2015, we at Von Baer have dedicated ourselves to high-quality real leather.
Here's a 30-second summary of how to choose a better leather product:
- Leather comes in different grades: full-grain, top-grain, and split/bonded - which represent how much of the original product is used (less product used = cheaper).
- Full-grain is the best grade of leather you can buy: exceptionally durable, developing an elegant patina, and having that beautiful real leather smell.
- Cheaper grades are less durable, age poorly, and don't have that authentic scent.
- Leather is processed through "tanning", which makes it durable and water-resistant.
- The two main methods for this are "vegetable-tanning" and "chrome-tanning".
- Chrome tanning uses harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and produce a worse quality leather.
- Vegetable tanning is the best method, being more eco-friendly, and producing leather with a better patina and scent.
That's why here at Von Baer, we only use full-grain vegetable-tanned Italian leather, sourced from the finest tanneries across Tuscany, Italy.
It ages beautifully over time, developing a unique patina, making it more durable and luxurious than lower-quality leather.
It's also why we developed the leather standards trademark Cuoio Superiore (meaning "superior leather" in Italian).
