Buying Guide
Full-grain Italian leather briefcases, handcrafted in Florence. Carry yours through years of daily commute without the hardware quitting first. They weight between 2.4 to 4.4 lb across the range, with solid brass hardware, and a 5-year repair warranty included.
We've watched leather briefcases give out under a 16-inch laptop, a binder of A4 files and a charger across a daily commute. We've seen the hardware go first, then the stitching at the gussets, then the lining pilling against your suit jacket by month eighteen.
Our partner studios in Florence and Northern Italy tan our leather, using time-honored vegetable-tanning traditions practiced in Tuscany since 1961.
Von Baer Full Grain Leather Briefcases. Tanned in Tuscany, Italy.
Von Baer full grain leather briefcases are designed for your daily work essentials. We don't sell bonded leather dressed up as 'genuine leather' grade. Here's why to choose us:
- Cuoio Superiore Certified Italian Leather: We use Cuoio Superiore certified leather, an Italian standard that requires 48 to 72 hours of vegetable tanning with quebracho, mimosa, and chestnut tannins. Our leather builds character as it ages because of the slow tannin-collagen bond, rather than peeling at the flap edges the way bonded or 'genuine leather' grade alternatives do. If you've ever owned a leather briefcase that started to flake along its stitched seams, you'll know why this is bad.
- Solid Brass Hardware and YKK Zippers: We use solid brass for every buckle, rivet and zipper, sourced from family-run Italian workshops, with YKK supplying the zippers themselves. We've watched plated alloys tarnish and fail at the joints, while solid brass holds - not on a Von Baer briefcase.
- Fine Italian Cotton Canvas Lining: Our lining is fine Italian cotton canvas on every briefcase in this collection, not polyester or microfiber. We chose cotton because it breathes, ages alongside the leather and doesn't hold the gym-bag smell that synthetic linings build up over a year of carry. Cotton is also kinder to the suit jacket pressed against the bag wall on a packed subway car.
- Built Light for Daily Commuting: Every briefcase in this collection weighs between 1.1 and 1.8 kg (2.4 to 4.0 lb) across all nine models, from the slim Elegant at the lower end to the triple-gusset No.1 at the higher. We've seen comparable full-grain leather briefcases in this price range clock in at 2 kg (4.4 lb) or more, enough to turn a forty-minute commute into a shoulder complaint by the time you reach your desk. We chose lighter-weight over a rigid attaché-case style because a bag you'll actually carry every day is better than a bag that looks good (at home, on the shelf). All of our cases come with a detachable shoulder strap too.
- 5-Year Repair Warranty: Our 5-year warranty pays for the repair, not the replacement. If a stitch wears through in year four, we fix the bag at no charge.
- Complimentary Personalization: We hand-apply your blind-embossed initials free, up to four characters pressed under heated brass type onto the included detachable luggage tag.
Von Baer Full-Grain Leather Briefcase Range for Men. Expertly Designed for Professionals.
Our collection spans nine briefcases, from a 1.1 kg (2.4 lb) slim case through to a 2 kg (4.4 lb) convertible travel briefcase backpack. Here are the highlights:
- Elegant Slim Leather Laptop Bag - At 1.1 kg (2.4 lb), the Elegant Slim is the lightest briefcase in the range. It fits a 14-inch laptop and A4 documents. We've built in three pen slots, slip pockets for phone and tablet plus a large back pocket for whatever you need fast. If you carry your work in a slim laptop and a notebook, not a hardware bench, this is the bag we'd point you at.
- Essential Modern Briefcase - The Essential is our zip-top everyday for the 15.6-inch laptop crowd. Our dual zipped compartments, an external zipped back pocket and a large internal zipped pocket swallow a charger, a passport and a hotel keycard without making you dig. The padded sleeve fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro; the empty bag weighs 1.3 kg (2.87 lb). And it has a luggage strap too.
- No.1 Men's Leather Briefcase - If you walk into a courtroom or a boardroom with confidential case files, the No.1's triple-gusset structure separates a 16-inch laptop, A4 binders and pens into three distinct compartments. The key-lock closure keeps the contents shut between leaving chambers and unpacking at counsel's table; 1.7 kg (3.75 lb) empty.
- City Large Leather Laptop Bag - We recommend the City Large if you carry a 17-inch laptop. Standard briefcases at this tier max out around 15.6 inches, leaving you with a bag that doesn't fit your work. We added a padded laptop compartment, two quick-access exterior pockets and a large internal zipped pocket; 1.8 kg (4.0 lb) empty.
- 10X Leather Laptop Travel Bag - For weeks when your office is an airline seat, the 10X converts between briefcase, messenger and backpack carry without a separate strap kit. Our expandable depth takes it from 21 to 28 liters (5.5 to 7.4 gallons) when you're packing an overnight, and four detachable padded organizers stop your charger from wandering. It fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro in the padded sleeve at 2 kg (4.4 lb) empty.

How Is Von Baer Leather Different?
Not all leather is the same.
Since 2015, we at Von Baer have dedicated ourselves to high-quality real leather.
Here's a 30-second summary of how to choose a better leather product:
- Leather comes in different grades: full-grain, top-grain, and split/bonded - which represent how much of the original product is used (less product used = cheaper).
- Full-grain is the best grade of leather you can buy: exceptionally durable, developing an elegant patina, and having that beautiful real leather smell.
- Cheaper grades are less durable, age poorly, and don't have that authentic scent.
- Leather is processed through "tanning", which makes it durable and water-resistant.
- The two main methods for this are "vegetable-tanning" and "chrome-tanning".
- Chrome tanning uses harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and produce a worse quality leather.
- Vegetable tanning is the best method, being more eco-friendly, and producing leather with a better patina and scent.
That's why here at Von Baer, we only use full-grain vegetable-tanned Italian leather, sourced from the finest tanneries across Tuscany, Italy.
It ages beautifully over time, developing a unique patina, making it more durable and luxurious than lower-quality leather.
It's also why we developed the leather standards trademark Cuoio Superiore (meaning "superior leather" in Italian).
