Room for the Whole Case File

A litigation briefcase has to carry your laptop, pleadings, exhibits, legal pads, binders, transcripts, and chargers, all at once. If it can't fit a full day's trial material organized and accessible, it's the wrong briefcase.

Three gusseted compartments

A triple-gusset design (three separate compartments) is the standard for this kind of load. Active trial materials go in one section, your laptop in its own padded compartment, personal items and chargers in the third.

A protected laptop compartment

The padded laptop section matters on its own. Sizes across the market range from 14 to 17 inches, depending on the model. If you're carrying a 16-inch MacBook Pro alongside a thick redweld, you want that laptop in its own protected compartment rather than riding against the paper.

The limit is straightforward: a thin, fashion-oriented briefcase cannot hold a trial load. If you force a full day's files into a slim single-compartment briefcase, you'll crush your exhibits and lose time looking for what you need.

Leather, Ballistic Nylon, or a Hard-Side Case

Full-grain leather looks right at the counsel table and holds its condition for years. Ballistic nylon is lighter and resists scuffs. An aluminum hard-side attaché protects files and devices from crushing. The material you choose sets the courtroom impression, the weight in your hand, and how long the briefcase holds up.

Full-grain leather

Full-grain leather is the outermost layer of the hide with the natural grain preserved in full. It's the strongest, most durable grade, and the traditional courtroom material. It holds its condition through years of daily use, staying distinguished where cheaper grades end up cracking and peeling. The trade-off is real: a full-grain leather briefcase costs more and weighs more than nylon.

Below full-grain, the grades drop fast. Top-grain has been sanded and refinished to remove surface blemishes, which strips away durability. "Genuine leather" is a lower grade made from split or corrected hides. Bonded leather is the bottom: shavings and dust pressed and glued together. None of them belong in a briefcase you're relying on five days a week.

When you're evaluating leather quality, look for three things:

• A-grade hides, chosen for tight, fine, consistent grain.
• Leather cut from the bend of the hide (the back and butt, where the fibers are densest and tightest).
• Drum-dyed color that runs all the way through rather than sitting on the surface.

Look at the cut edge: if the color goes all the way through, it's drum-dyed. Surface-dyed leather fades pale at a scuff. Drum-dyed leather doesn't.

A certified leather origin is worth looking for, too. Any brand can describe its own leather however it likes. Certification means the claim has been laboratory-tested and the tannery audited, not just declared on a product page.

Ballistic nylon

Ballistic nylon is the lighter, harder-wearing alternative. It resists scuffs and rain, weighs less, and handles the constant transit between courthouses, airports, and taxis without needing special care. It doesn't have the same courtroom presence as leather, and it never will. But if you prize portability over presence, it handles the work.

Aluminum hard-side

An aluminum hard-side attaché offers the most protection for physical files and devices. Sealed exhibits, paper models, and electronics stay shielded from bending or crushing. It's the heaviest option and the coldest in terms of courtroom impression, but if protecting what's inside is the priority, nothing else comes close.

Locking Down Privileged and Sealed Files

A lock on your briefcase is a practical necessity. Privileged communications, sealed court documents, and confidential case material travel with you in places where other people are close and your attention is elsewhere. A key-lock closure keeps the briefcase secured when it's:
