Do 15 and 16-Inch Laptops Fit the Same Bags?

Most 15 and 16-inch laptops fit the same bags. Modern 15.6-inch machines and 16-inch laptops have slimmed their bezels enough that their outer dimensions are nearly identical. The common 15.6-inch Windows laptop fits inside most 15 and 16-inch sleeves, and a padded sleeve built for 15.6 inches will almost always hold a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
The number on the label doesn't settle it. The sleeve's interior width, depth, and thickness do. Some 16-inch laptops, particularly workstation and gaming models, are measurably thicker or wider than a standard ultrabook at the same screen size. If your machine is at the larger end, compare its outer dimensions to the sleeve's stated measurements before buying.
In our range, the City, Essential, and Diplomat hold 15.6-inch laptops (a 16-inch MacBook Pro fits their sleeves), the 10X holds 16-inch, and our City Large is the only bag in the range that fits a 17-inch laptop in a dedicated padded center compartment.
What to Look for in a Leather Laptop Bag at This Size

A few things separate a leather laptop bag worth its price from one that only looks the part: the leather grade, the laptop protection, the lining, and the hardware.
Leather grade
- Full-grain leather uses the complete outer surface of the hide with the natural grain preserved in full. It's the strongest, most durable grade. Bonded leather and "genuine" leather are cheaper grades made from processed or corrected hides that age poorly and lack the surface character and longevity of full-grain. If a bag doesn't name its leather grade, it's usually one of those.
- Thicker is not better. 1.4 to 1.8 mm is the right thickness for a leather bag: enough to hold its shape and drape properly without bulking up, and thin enough to shape into a comfortable handle and a clean silhouette. Very thick 2.5 to 3 mm leather belongs to saddlery and workwear, heavy and stiff. No luxury house builds business bags from it.
- Look for drum-dyed leather, where the color runs all the way through the hide rather than sitting on the surface. It won't fade pale at a scuff the way surface-dyed leather does. Check the cut edge: if the color goes all the way through, it's drum-dyed.
At Von Baer, we use full-grain leather range-wide and select A-grade hides from Bos Taurus cattle only, chosen for tight, fine, consistent grain. Hides with excessive bites, scars, or surface damage don't make the selection. Our bag leather is cut to 1.4 to 1.8 mm and drum-dyed through the hide.
We cut our leather from the bend, the back and butt of the hide, where the fibers are densest and tightest. Our briefcases carry Cuoio Superiore certification, where each leather batch is laboratory-tested and the tannery itself is audited on-site at least every three years.
Laptop protection
At this size, your laptop is heavy enough to need its own dedicated padded compartment, separate from the main space, so it isn't pressing against hard objects or shifting when you set the bag down. A padded, reinforced base underneath means the machine isn't resting on the ground through the bag every time you put it down.
Lining
A leather or suede interior looks good until something spills. If a bottle leaks inside a suede-lined bag, the suede soaks it up and the stain is permanent. A proper lining gives you the chance to clean it before it reaches the leather.
Our men's business bags are lined with high-grade cotton twill, natural in feel, durable, protective, and easier to clean than suede or exposed leather. Where a product needs rigidity, in a bag base or a structured panel, we use leather board, a dense material made from genuine leather fiber, rather than the pressed cardboard or plastic sheet that warps when it meets humidity.
In certain women's bags we use a high-grade technical weave instead, lighter and smoother, and it sits better in a structured bag. Twill would be the wrong choice there, too heavy for the silhouette.
Hardware and zippers
The hardware on a leather bag has a job to do. D-rings, snap hooks, locks, and strap connectors get pulled, opened, closed, and stressed every day the bag is carried. Poor hardware reveals itself quickly: sharp edges, rough polishing, weak spring mechanisms, loose movement, corrosion, or failure under repeated use. New hardware always looks fine. What matters is how it feels in the hand, how securely it works, how cleanly it sits against the leather, and how it holds up a few thousand uses later.
- Every piece of our hardware passes four separate checks by four different teams before it reaches a finished bag. We've sold over 5,000 locked briefcases in the last ten years, with fewer than 0.1% recorded lock failures.
- Our zippers have brass teeth set into high-tenacity polyester tape, with a denser, closer tooth arrangement than a standard metal zipper, independently tested by accredited third-party laboratories for corrosion resistance and metal safety. In manufacturer testing, lateral strength reached 650N against the 250N standard minimum for size #5 and 750N against 470N for size #8, cycle-tested to 2,500 open-close cycles against the standard's 500 minimum.
- Every strap anchor, D-ring mount and handle attachment is built as a load-bearing component: layered leather, skived to control thickness, reinforced inside with tear-resistant material, so the stress spreads through the structure rather than concentrating on a single layer. We use Schmetz needles from Germany in three point types, with the size chosen by how thick the leather is at each part of the bag, and Serafil thread by the Amann Group in three weights.
Weight and carry
Leather is heavier than nylon or canvas, and a 15 or 16-inch laptop adds more. An adjustable padded shoulder strap and sturdy reinforced handles matter at this size, because you'll feel the combined weight over a full day's carry.
Warranty
A 5-year warranty is a useful quality signal. If the maker won't stand behind the bag for that long, the construction may not hold up either. We back every Von Baer bag with a 5-year limited warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship under normal use.
The way we see it, if a bag was built wrong somewhere, a weak seam or a faulty zipper, you'll usually see it within the first year or two of normal use. The honest warranty in this industry runs 1 to 2 years. We cover 5, more than double.
The Best Leather Laptop Bags for 15 and 16-Inch Laptops

Best Leather Briefcase for a 16-Inch Laptop
A structured leather briefcase holds a 16-inch laptop and A4 documents flat, and it's the most formal option for meetings, courtrooms, or client offices where the bag is part of the impression. A triple-gusset design holds papers without folding and keeps the laptop in its own padded compartment, separate from documents and smaller items. A key-lock or zip-top closure adds security for sensitive files.
The briefcase is also the home for larger screens. Where a slim laptop bag or crossbody bag tops out at 15.6 inches (you'll find those in our 15-inch laptop bags), the larger briefcases hold 16-inch machines with room alongside for documents, chargers, and a phone.
- The Von Baer No.1 Leather Briefcase, our flagship triple-gusset, has key-lock closure and the most internal organization in the range. We built it for the partner walking into chambers or the bank board with sensitive case files and a 16-inch laptop.
- The Von Baer Essential Modern Briefcase has a zip-top profile with dual zipped main compartments and a 15.6-inch padded laptop sleeve sized to fit a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
- The Von Baer Diplomat Leather Briefcase is a small, slim take on the classic work briefcase, with a single key-lock closure and a padded sleeve that fits up to a 15.6-inch laptop, including a 16-inch MacBook Pro. It's designed for commutes, meetings, and travel days that call for a cleaner carry.
You'll find all three in our briefcases for larger screens.
The trade-off: a leather briefcase is the heaviest of these bags, and it's a hand-carry or single-shoulder carry. In practice, our bags weigh from 1.1 kg (the Von Baer Elegant Slim Laptop Bag) to 1.8 kg (the Von Baer City Large Laptop Bag). If your commute involves a long walk or public transit where you need both hands free, a crossbody bag or a backpack handles that better.
Best Leather Messenger Bag for Commuting
A leather messenger bag gives you crossbody carry and quick side access, which makes it the most practical bag for a daily commute where you're reaching for your phone, laptop, or transit card several times an hour.
The crossbody strap leaves both hands free, and the flap or zip opens from the side rather than the top, so you don't need to set the bag down to get into it. The profile lies flatter against your body than a briefcase, and the line is softer, at home in most offices without looking as formal as a structured briefcase.
Look for:
- A dedicated padded laptop compartment inside.
- A wide padded crossbody strap that distributes the weight.
- Enough internal organization to keep your charger and cables separate from the screen.
The strap matters more than most buyers expect. A clinical study on bag-carrying ergonomics found that among professionals carrying 2 to 4 kg shoulder bags daily, half reported right-shoulder pain and over 40% reported neck strain. Interface pressure dropped significantly with wider straps, around 8 cm, and higher load placement against the body.
In our range, the Diplomat's detachable crossbody strap leaves your hands free when you're moving between office, client site, and courtroom. The 10X converts to messenger mode with a quick-access external laptop compartment up to 16 inches, with the option to switch to backpack carry when your commute changes.
The trade-off: with any crossbody bag, the full weight rests on one shoulder. If your laptop is heavy and your commute runs long on foot, a backpack handles the weight better.
Best Leather Laptop Backpack
A leather laptop backpack spreads the weight of a heavy 16-inch machine across both shoulders, making it the most comfortable bag for longer commutes on foot or public transit.
At this laptop size, the combined weight of the machine, charger, and a day's documents adds up. Two padded shoulder straps and a padded back panel distribute that load across your frame instead of hanging it from one shoulder or one hand. And both hands stay completely free.
Look for:
- A padded laptop compartment in the back panel, closest to your body, so the weight stays centered rather than pulling the bag backward.
- A reinforced base and protective feet to keep the bag's shape when you set it down.
Our 10X converts between backpack, messenger, and briefcase modes without taking the laptop out of its padded sleeve. Its expandable capacity (21L to 28L) adapts from workday to weekend, with carry-on compliant dimensions for overhead lockers.
The trade-off: a backpack is the least formal of these bags. It's at home in a creative office, a tech company, or on the move, but it won't carry the same weight in a boardroom as a structured briefcase.
Best Leather Laptop Tote
A structured leather tote with a padded laptop sleeve carries a 15 or 16-inch machine alongside your daily items in an open, professional style.
The tote's open top gives you quick access to everything without unzipping or unbuckling. You carry it on the shoulder or in the crook of your arm, and it suits both work and personal settings more easily than a briefcase or a backpack. For women looking for a professional laptop bag, the tote is often the first bag to consider: it holds a laptop without looking like a tech accessory, and the proportions suit a wider range of professional outfits.
- Without a padded laptop sleeve, your machine slides around inside the bag with no protection.
- Without a rigid base, the tote collapses under its own weight.
Look for both.
We'd recommend the Von Baer Elegance Leather Tote Bag for this, because it's built with both: a rigid base that holds its shape under weight and a padded laptop sleeve that keeps the machine secure.
The trade-off: an open top means less security. In a crowded train or a busy coffee shop, a zipped or latched bag gives you more peace of mind. And a tote carries all its weight on one shoulder, so if your load is heavy and your commute is long, a backpack handles the distance better.
Best Designer Leather Laptop Bag
The most expensive leather goods tend to carry the least visible branding. Research from Columbia Business School found that higher-priced luxury products typically have less prominent logos, not more.
And informed buyers actively avoid counterfeits. A study on luxury purchasing behaviour put intentional counterfeit purchases at nearly 50%, driven almost entirely by consumers with low product knowledge.
Judge the bag the same way you'd judge any other: what grade is the leather, how is the laptop compartment built, what does the hardware feel like in your hand. If those answers hold up, the premium is earned.
Von Baer never does discounts, coupons, or seasonal sales. We sell directly to you, and our price reflects the materials and craftsmanship without overpricing tactics. If you want the premium end of the range, browse the designer options.
How to Choose the Right Leather Laptop Bag for You

The pick turns on four things: how formal your setting is, how much you carry, how far you walk, and how often you need to reach inside the bag.
- Formal, client-facing work with a laptop and documents: a structured briefcase. It looks the part and holds everything flat. The No.1's triple-gusset design and key-lock closure give you the most organized, most formal briefcase in the range.
- Daily commute with quick access: a crossbody bag or a slim briefcase with a detachable strap. You're in and out of the bag constantly, and both hands need to be free on transit.
- Heavy load over a longer distance on foot or transit: a backpack. Both shoulders share the weight, and your hands stay free. The 10X adds the flexibility to switch to messenger or briefcase mode when the setting calls for it.
- Open, professional use with a laptop and daily items: a tote. Quick access, flexible across settings, and enough room for a full day's worth.
- Mixed-use days: a convertible bag that switches between carry modes without repacking. If your morning meeting needs a briefcase silhouette and your afternoon site visit needs a backpack, the 10X covers both.
- Travel days: a carry-on compliant bag with a luggage strap and enough organization for a laptop, documents, and a change of clothes.
If you're shopping by laptop size, our 15-inch leather collection is the starting point for this size class, and you can browse the full laptop bag range from there.
Every bag in our range can be personalized with blind-embossed initials on the included leather luggage tag, at no extra charge.
FAQs

Who Makes the Best Leather Laptop Bags?
The best leather laptop bags come from makers that use full-grain leather, build a dedicated padded laptop compartment, fit durable hardware, and back the bag with a warranty that covers more than a year.
A brand name alone doesn't prove quality. The marks that matter are verifiable: the leather grade is named, the laptop compartment is padded and built for the machine it claims to fit, the hardware feels solid in your hand, and the warranty terms are clear. Leather sold with certified documentation of origin is a stronger claim than a label that says "real leather," because the buyer can check it instead of trusting the seller.
At Von Baer, each bag includes certified documentation of leather origin and is covered by our 5-year warranty.
Is a Leather Tote or a Backpack Better for a Laptop?
For a laptop, neither is universally better: it depends on your load and how far you carry it. A tote gives you open, quick reach and a professional silhouette. A backpack distributes the weight across both shoulders and handles distance better.
Choose a tote if you want quick reach, a flexible look across settings, and your commute is short enough that single-shoulder weight isn't a problem. Choose a backpack if your load is heavy, your commute is long on foot, or you need both hands free. If laptop protection is the deciding factor, a backpack with a padded back compartment generally holds the machine more securely than an open-top tote.
How Do You Measure a Laptop for a Bag?
Measure your laptop's width, depth, and thickness with a tape measure, and match those numbers to the bag's interior sleeve dimensions.
The screen size (15.6 inches, 16 inches) is a diagonal measurement of the display. It doesn't account for the laptop's actual width or thickness, and two laptops with the same screen size can differ by a centimeter or more in width. Close the laptop, measure its width at the widest point, its depth from front to back, and its thickness. Compare those to the sleeve dimensions listed for the bag, and allow at least half a centimeter of clearance on width and depth.
