What to look for in a new lawyer's briefcase

Size, material, structure, and color are the four things that decide whether a briefcase lasts through years of legal work or gets replaced inside twelve months. Every choice comes back to the same question of whether this case will still look right and work properly five years into your career.

The right size for a laptop, legal pads, and files

Your briefcase needs to fit a 15 to 16-inch laptop in a dedicated padded compartment, legal pads, and at least a day's worth of files. Legal-size folders measure about 9.5 by 14.75 inches, larger than standard A4, and a compartment that can't lie them flat isn't doing the job. A padded laptop compartment is the non-negotiable: it keeps the screen separate from everything else in the case, and cracked screens turn a long working day into a longer one.

A slim briefcase holds a normal office day's load: your laptop, a pad, a few documents, a charger. If you're in litigation and carry case bundles or trial binders to court, you need a larger briefcase with multiple gusseted compartments that keep the papers organized and the laptop protected.

Most new associates sit somewhere between those two ends. A briefcase that fits a 16-inch laptop, a legal pad, and a day's files without looking overpacked is the one you'll reach for most mornings.

Leather built to last

Full-grain leather is the best grade of leather you can buy. It uses the complete outer surface of the hide with the natural grain preserved in full, and it's the strongest, most durable grade. Lower grades (top-grain, "genuine," bonded) are sanded or split to remove surface imperfections, which weakens the hide and shortens its life. If a briefcase doesn't specify "full-grain," it almost certainly isn't.

Within full-grain, the differences come down to hide selection and cut. A-grade hides, chosen for tight, fine, consistent grain, are the top selection grade. Hides with excessive bites, scars, or surface damage don't make the cut. Where the leather is taken from matters too: the bend (the back and butt of the hide) is where the fibers are densest and tightest, while belly and shoulder leather stretches more and wears faster. Drum-dyed leather, where the color goes all the way through the hide rather than on the surface alone, won't fade pale at a scuff.

Thickness is worth knowing, but thicker isn't better. Refined leather bags measure about 1.4 to 1.8 mm. Very thick 2.5 to 3 mm leather belongs to saddlery and workwear: heavy, stiff, and impossible to shape into a comfortable handle or a clean silhouette. Hardware and lining

Reinforced stitching at all stress points and load-bearing hardware that doesn't rattle or corrode are the construction details that outlast the leather itself.

And the lining matters more than it sounds: a cotton twill lining protects both the contents and the leather. If something spills inside a suede-lined briefcase, the suede absorbs it and the stain is permanent. A proper lining gives you the chance to clean it before it reaches the leather.
