• Cuoio Superiore Certified Leather: We hold Cuoio Superiore certification on every briefcase in this range. Cuoio Superiore is an external Italian standard, with laboratory testing, a 12-month certificate validity and mandatory on-site audits at least every three years by an independent testing institute. Our leather goes through 48 to 72 hours of vegetable tanning using quebracho, mimosa and chestnut tannins, with the slower absorption building a deeper bond between tannin and the hide's collagen fibres - the bond that holds firm across years of carrying the bag and that builds the patina the leather develops with use.
• Solid Brass and YKK Hardware: Our zippers, locks and protective metal feet are solid brass throughout. We chose solid brass over plated zinc alloy because plated hardware tarnishes and gives way at the joints. Our zippers carry the YKK mark, with YKK Excella on the wheeled carry-on for the extra abuse airline travel puts on a zip. In our experience hardware is what fails on a bag before the leather does, which is why we picked the material that outlasts the leather.
• A4 File Compartments and Padded Laptop Sleeves: Every briefcase in this range fits unbent A4 case files and a padded laptop sleeve sized to the bag - 14-inch on the Elegant Slim and the Liberty backpack, 16-inch on the No.1, the No.2 and the Voyager wheeled carry-on, 17-inch on the City Large. The triple-gusset No.1 separates trial documents from devices and accessories, so when opposing counsel asks for a contract you reach to the right compartment without rummaging. We added padding to every laptop sleeve specifically because cracked screens turn a long trial into a migraine.
• 5-Year Repair Warranty: We back every briefcase in this range with a 5-year limited warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship under normal use, with repair as the remedy at no charge. We chose 5 years because a legal career runs longer than a season's collection. We repair under warranty by sending the briefcase back to the same family-owned Italian studio that made it, where the studio inspects the issue and resolves it under our warranty terms.
• Personalized Tag, Quiet Brand Markers: Our briefcases carry no logo plate, no metal nameplate and no printed Von Baer mark on the body of the bag. Our brand markers are intentionally quiet: a discreet VB deboss pressed into the leather, an engraved mark on the lock and zipper hardware. We hand-press up to four uppercase initials into a matching leather luggage tag at no extra charge, blind-embossed under heated brass type with no ink and no thread. Your initials are the visible mark on the bag (if you want them to be); ours are quiet.
• Duties Absorbed at Delivery: Von Baer pre-pays every duty, tax and shipping cost into the price you see on the page. How do I care for my leather lawyer briefcase?

To care for your briefcase, wipe it with a soft dry cloth after each commute and condition every three to six months with a neutral leather conditioner. Keep the bag stored upright out of direct sunlight so the patina develops evenly and the frame holds its shape under daily use.

Are leather briefcases waterproof?

Full-grain leather is water-resistant rather than waterproof. Our bags shed a short shower or coffee spill; in heavy rain, cover the bag or switch to the Voyager, which has a covered top zipper and protective metal feet.

Is full-grain leather worth the higher price?

Full-grain is the highest grade of cowhide and the only grade that develops a genuine rich patina rather than peeling or flaking the way bonded or "genuine leather" alternatives do. A full-grain bag keeps its shape and finish after five years of daily commute in the courtroom or on litigation cases, including for a traditional barrister's briefcase used every working day.

What size briefcase fits legal pads and a 15-inch laptop?

The No.1 (16-inch padded laptop sleeve, triple-gusset with secure locks) and City Large (17-inch sleeve, single compartment) both hold an A4 legal pad flat alongside a 15-inch laptop. The No.2 messenger takes up to a 15.6-inch device in a double-gusset layout with two main compartments, reinforced handles and easier access via the flap closure.
