What actually matters in a weekend bag

1. Hardware quality

Zippers and rivets fail before leather fails. The specific places it goes: the zipper teeth slip apart under load (which is what happens when you cram an extra layer in for the flight home), the rivet at the base of the top handle works loose every time you set the bag down on the lobby floor and pick it up again, and the buckle tongue snaps after it has been bent open and shut at airport security too many times.

2. Leather grade

"Genuine leather" is, despite the name, the lowest grade after bonded. It's the layer that's left after the good leather has been split off. Full-grain leather keeps the outer hide intact, which is what gives you a bag that develops character instead of peeling at the stitched edges in year two.

The conditioning matters too. 3. Empty weight versus your loadout

A leather weekender starts at around 3 to 4 pounds empty. A nylon weekender starts at around 1.5 pounds. By the time both bags hit the security tray with three days of clothes, a pair of shoes and a toiletry kit, the difference is real but smaller than the empty-weight comparison suggests.
