Buyer's Guide
Find a Gift That Feels Unique and Meaningful - For Him or Her
Let’s be real—when it comes to Valentine’s Day, the pressure is on. You want to give something that’s more than just nice; you want it to feel thoughtful and special. The right gift doesn’t just say “I love you.” It says, “I see you, and I get you.” That’s why the best gifts stand out as unique, whether it’s a custom-designed piece of jewelry or an experience that you’ve tailor-made for your partner.
Prioritize Quality to Show You Care
You know what separates a “meh” gift from one they’ll never forget? Quality. You can feel it, see it, even smell it sometimes (like that amazing leather smell—more on that in a minute). A high-quality gift isn’t just about the price tag; it’s about craftsmanship and the story behind it.
If you’re looking at leather goods, here’s the deal:
-
Full-grain leather:
- The crème de la crème.
- Tough, ages beautifully, and has all the natural imperfections that make it unique.
- Perfect for wallets, travel bags, jackets, and briefcases.
- Thickness should be at least 1.2mm for durability.
-
Vegetable-tanned leather:
- Eco-friendly and develops a stunning patina over time.
- Perfect for artisanal pieces like journals or belts.
That's why we use full-grain vegetable-tanned Italian leather on all Von Baer products.
Here are a few leather gift ideas that’ll impress:
- Weekender bags: A full-grain leather duffel like our Weekender (21.65" x 11.81" x 9.25") balances sophistication with practicality. Big enough for a getaway but sleek enough to carry anywhere.
- Wallets: Our Classic Bifold Wallet is a winner. It’s slim, has 6 card slots, and even includes RFID-blocking tech to protect against electronic theft.
- Jackets: If you’re going for a leather jacket, lambskin is soft and luxe, while cowhide is more rugged. A Schott NYC Perfecto is iconic, but if their style leans modern, AllSaints’ Milo Biker Jacket is a solid pick.
"Quick tip: Quality leather has natural grain patterns and slight imperfections. If it looks too smooth and uniform, it might be fake or low-grade."
Make the Presentation Count
Okay, so you’ve picked an amazing gift—don’t ruin the moment by handing it over in a plastic bag (yes, that happens). Presentation is everything. A well-wrapped gift sets the tone and makes the whole experience feel intentional.
What are your options?
- Velvet or suede boxes: Perfect for jewelry or small items. They add that “ooh” factor right away.
- High-end wrapping paper: Go for something embossed or textured, and pair it with a wide ribbon (1.5 inches or more looks luxe). If you want to get fancy, add a wax seal.
- Reusable packaging: Try a silk scarf (around 28" x 28") that doubles as part of the gift or a handcrafted wooden box they can use later.
And don’t forget the note. No, a generic “Happy Valentine’s Day” won’t cut it. Write something personal—maybe a memory tied to the gift or why you chose it. It doesn’t need to be Shakespeare; it just needs to feel authentic.
"Pro move: Add layers to the wrapping—like tissue paper with a light scent, a fabric pouch, and then the outer box. Unwrapping it becomes part of the experience."
Match the Gift to Their Passions
The best gifts are the ones that hit on something your partner is genuinely passionate about. This isn’t about playing it safe; it’s about showing you’ve paid attention to the details of what they love.
For travel lovers:
- Luxury luggage: The Voyager Carry-on Bag (15.75" x 16.69" x 7.09") is lightweight, durable, and sleek. With a large capacity, it’s perfect for quick trips.
- Travel accessories: Pair a Harrington monogrammed leather passport holder with Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones (24-hour battery life, and you can adjust the noise-canceling level).
For art enthusiasts:
- Commissioned artwork: Find a local artist or use platforms like Saatchi Art to create a custom piece that reflects their favorite themes.
- Limited-edition prints or sculptures: Look for pieces that are numbered and signed for authenticity.
For foodies:
- Rare ingredients: Think aged Modena balsamic vinegar (25 years, DOP-certified), single-origin saffron (at least 2 grams), or a set of artisanal sea salts.
- Kitchen tools: A handcrafted Damascus steel chef’s knife isn’t just functional—it’s a piece of art.
"Pro tip: Turn a gift into an experience. For example, if they love travel, include a surprise weekend itinerary along with the luggage."
For jewelry lovers:
If jewelry’s your go-to, make it personal. Consider:
- A necklace with intertwined rings symbolizing your bond.
- A bracelet with both your birthstones (extra points if they’re subtly incorporated).
- High-quality materials like 18k gold or platinum for durability and timelessness.
- Gemstones with excellent clarity (VS1 or higher for diamonds—basically, sparkly enough to catch everyone’s eye).
Want to go all out? Consider commissioning a one-of-a-kind piece. It’s heirloom territory. Or go for a Tiffany bracelet, that's a classic.
Not into jewelry? Experiences can be just as meaningful. Imagine:
- Booking a private wine-blending session at a vineyard.
- Organizing an after-hours museum tour.
These kinds of gifts scream exclusivity, and they’re unforgettable.
"Bottom line: Whether it’s a piece of custom jewelry or a once-in-a-lifetime experience, make it something they can’t find on a shelf."
Create Memories Through Shared Experiences
You can never go wrong with an experience-based gift. Unlike physical items, experiences create stories you’ll both remember (and tell your friends about). The key? Make it personal and, if possible, a little exclusive.
Ideas to consider:
- Wellness retreats: Spend a weekend at Amangiri or Canyon Ranch. Think daily spa treatments, sunrise yoga, and private hiking tours.
- Adventure packages: A hot air balloon ride followed by a champagne breakfast in Napa Valley is equal parts thrilling and romantic.
- VIP tickets: Whether it’s their favorite band or a Broadway show, go all out with backstage passes or pre-show dinners.
"Little extra: After the experience, surprise them with a keepsake—like a photo album or a framed ticket stub—to remember the day."
Make It Personal
There’s just something about a personalized gift that hits differently. It shows that you didn’t just grab the first thing you saw—you actually thought about them.
Here are some personalized ideas:
- Engraved jewelry: Add a meaningful date, coordinates, or a short message. For diamonds, stick to 18k gold or platinum and a carat weight between 0.5–1.5 for everyday wear.
- Custom leather goods: Monogrammed totes or laptop cases from Von Baer add a sophisticated touch.
- Signature fragrances: Some brands, like Jo Malone, Dior, or Le Labo, let you create a custom scent tailored to their preferences.
"Pro tip: Keep personalization subtle and timeless. Overly flashy monograms can feel gimmicky, while something understated adds elegance."
Add Practical Indulgences
Who says practical can’t be luxurious? The right gift can elevate their daily routine while still feeling indulgent. Look for items they’ll use often but that still feel special every time.
Top picks:
- Coffee machines: The Jura S8 Automatic Coffee Machine is a game-changer. It brews 15 specialty drinks, has a touchscreen, and even grinds the beans for you.
- Home comforts: A cashmere throw like the Brooklinen Mongolian cashmere blanket (50" x 70") or a weighted blanket from Gravity (15–20 pounds, depending on their preference) is perfect for cozy nights in.
- Designer tech accessories: Sleek leather AirPod cases or a custom laptop sleeve are great for blending style with utility.
Curated collections and shopping options for luxury gifts from Von Baer.
"When practicality meets indulgence, it’s not just a gift—it’s a little luxury they’ll enjoy every day."

Von Baer was founded because I wanted a unique and high-quality laptop bag for myself, without paying for an unreasonably overpriced designer brand. I've spent over 500 hours testing 1,000s of leather products over to help you get a better product.
I'm proud of the luxurious leather goods we've created since 2014, and I'm sure you'll love them too. Read more about our story here.
We strive for the highest editorial standards, and to only publish accurate information on our website.
How Is Von Baer Leather Different?
Not all leather is the same.
Since 2015, we at Von Baer have dedicated ourselves to high-quality real leather.
Here's a 30-second summary of how to choose a better leather product:
- Leather comes in different grades: full-grain, top-grain, and split/bonded - which represent how much of the original product is used (less product used = cheaper).
- Full-grain is the best grade of leather you can buy: exceptionally durable, developing an elegant patina, and having that beautiful real leather smell.
- Cheaper grades are less durable, age poorly, and don't have that authentic scent.
- Leather is processed through "tanning", which makes it durable and water-resistant.
- The two main methods for this are "vegetable-tanning" and "chrome-tanning".
- Chrome tanning uses harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and produce a worse quality leather.
- Vegetable tanning is the best method, being more eco-friendly, and producing leather with a better patina and scent.
That's why here at Von Baer, we only use full-grain vegetable-tanned Italian leather, sourced from the finest tanneries across Tuscany, Italy.
It ages beautifully over time, developing a unique patina, making it more durable and luxurious than lower-quality leather.
It's also why we developed the leather standards trademark Cuoio Superiore (meaning "superior leather" in Italian).
