Von Baer luxury leather backpacks are full-grain Italian leather across the range - the strongest outer layer of the hide, retained for durability and breathability rather than corrected or sanded. Most products in the range also carry the Cuoio Superiore mark, an independent Italian standard requiring laboratory testing and on-site audits at least every three years by an outside testing institute. Our certified leather is tanned over 48 to 72 hours using natural plant tannins (quebracho, mimosa and chestnut), compared to the 8-hour cycle other tanneries typically run.

• Solid Brass on the Work-and-Travel Tier: On our work-and-travel backpacks - the larger formats sized for daily commuting and multi-context travel - we specify solid brass zippers, buckles and rivets crafted in Italian workshops. Our brass hardware outlasts the plated zinc alloy that tarnishes and fails after a year of commuter use. We chose the material that outlasts the leather because hardware is the most common backpack failure point.
• Padded Laptop Sleeves on Work Backpacks: Our work backpacks include padded laptop sleeves sized to the format - 14-inch on the standard daily designs, up to 16-inch (fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro) on the convertible travel format. We added the laptop padding because cracked screens turn a long working day into a longer one. Our compact backpacks carry the essentials only - cards, keys, phone, a slim notebook.
• 5-Year Repair Warranty: We back every backpack with a 5-year limited warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship under normal use - repair-first remedy, no charge to you. In our experience, men's-cut backpacks dig at the shoulder strap on narrower frames, so we cut the women's pattern from a different template rather than scaling the same template down. Our Cuoio Superiore leather and solid brass hardware are identical across both fits.

For heavier rain, we recommend treating the leather with a quality conditioner monthly and allowing wet leather to air dry naturally - never use direct heat.
• How do I care for a leather backpack? Wipe with a soft damp cloth to remove dust, then apply a leather conditioner once a month. Store in the provided cotton dust bag when not in use. Avoid overfilling, which can strain the straps and stitching over time.
