Hard-shell vs. Softshell: Protection and Flexibility

A hard-shell bag provides maximum protection against shock and impact damage, including scrapes and general pressure from items stacked on top of it, etc. This does come at the cost of weight, however.

Softshell bags don’t provide as much protection from that kind of damage, but they are lighter and more flexible when it comes to stowing them in overhead or other luggage compartments, and they are less expensive at a similar quality level.

Wheeled luggage is heavier than non-wheeled, but this is mitigated in most situations because the traveler does not have to bear the weight. The bags glide smoothly with minimal effort. The weight is only an issue when it comes to airline weight allowances.
