Luggage Types
Carry-On
You probably know that a carry-on bag is necessary. No matter where you’re going or how long you’re staying, traveling with a carry-on is the most convenient option. Never fret about standing in a long line to check your bags between flights or about the airline misplacing your luggage.
The easiest and most effective method of transportation. You also know that you always bring more clothes than you need.
Weekenders, Backpacks, and Duffle Bags
When deciding where to invest, don’t only think about suitcases. You can look into a brand that offers duffles, backpacks, or weekenders to use as a personal item in addition to your suitcase or for quick weekend vacations.
Consider bags with a padded laptop compartment or a trolley sleeve for this. Or even a separate shoe storage area to keep everything organized.
The three main pillars to consider when choosing your own item are the organization, comfort, and simple access.
Checked Bag
If you’re going away for a month or more, it makes sense to travel with a checked bag. Or if you’re going somewhere cold or on a ski trip, this will undoubtedly take up the extra room because of the larger sweaters and coats you’ll need.
For improved balance and mobility, look for ones that are lightweight or positioned closer to the ground.
Pet Carrier
Are you taking a pet on the road? Numerous luggage companies are creating fashionable pet carriers for your four-legged pals that are as pleasant for you to carry as they are for them. Seriously, they thought of everything: washable liners, inner leash storage, side pockets for snacks, and mesh panels for airflow.
Material
When purchasing luggage, you should also consider the material. The most popular choices are leather, aluminum, polycarbonate, or soft skins made of nylon or polyester.
Leather
Leather is the best material for luggage, as it is high quality and lasts for many years, often becoming bags that span many generations. Choosing full grain leather, as it's the best quality available, and ages elegantly with leather patina.
Aluminum
Hard shells constructed of either aluminum or polycarbonate are the most resilient. Aluminum luggage is usually the most sought-after, but thanks to upscale manufacturers like Rimowa or Tumi, it has evolved into more of a status symbol.
Although they look nice and undoubtedly protect your belongings, they are bulky, pricey, and offer little room for the over-packer.
Soft Shell
A soft shell can be just as worthwhile of an investment if you haven’t jumped on the hard shell bandwagon, even if it is less durable because it is often constructed of nylon or polyester.
This is especially true if it comes with a lifetime warranty, as several of the manufacturers on this list do. Soft-shell luggage’s design is also more adaptable because many soft-shell bags feature outside pockets or expandable possibilities.
Polycarbonate
Although polycarbonate can look just as sleek and is almost as strong as aluminum, it is lighter and less expensive than aluminum, making it our preferred material. Unless you intend to run your baggage over with a trash truck, your polycarbonate suitcase should be alright.
How Has Travel and Luggage Changed Post Pandemic?
Travel is in full swing; the lengthy security lines, expensive plane tickets, and social media updates from buddies abroad clearly indicate it.
We are going more than ever to make up for the time and experiences lost due to the pandemic, a practice some industry insiders call “revenge travel.”
You may also have travel plans for yourself, in which case you’ll want to invest in some of the best baggage built for convenience, portability, and style (which, on a practical note, sets it apart from other bags on the carousel).
Purchasing sturdy baggage acts as a lifetime investment, meeting all your travel demands for years to come, whether or not you have immediate trip plans.
Companies that make baggage have evolved over time to include sustainability goals, svelte designs, and practical shapes.
The most recent luggage collections available combine dependability and style into one package. You’ll be prepared to say hello to the fascinating travel experiences that lie ahead with a suitcase in hand.

Von Baer was founded because I wanted a unique and high-quality laptop bag for myself, without paying for an unreasonably overpriced designer brand. I've spent over 500 hours testing 1,000s of leather products over to help you get a better product.
I'm proud of the luxurious leather goods we've created since 2014, and I'm sure you'll love them too. Read more about our story here.
We strive for the highest editorial standards, and to only publish accurate information on our website.
How Is Von Baer Leather Different?
Not all leather is the same.
Since 2015, we at Von Baer have dedicated ourselves to high-quality real leather.
Here's a 30-second summary of how to choose a better leather product:
- Leather comes in different grades: full-grain, top-grain, and split/bonded - which represent how much of the original product is used (less product used = cheaper).
- Full-grain is the best grade of leather you can buy: exceptionally durable, developing an elegant patina, and having that beautiful real leather smell.
- Cheaper grades are less durable, age poorly, and don't have that authentic scent.
- Leather is processed through "tanning", which makes it durable and water-resistant.
- The two main methods for this are "vegetable-tanning" and "chrome-tanning".
- Chrome tanning uses harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and produce a worse quality leather.
- Vegetable tanning is the best method, being more eco-friendly, and producing leather with a better patina and scent.
That's why here at Von Baer, we only use full-grain vegetable-tanned Italian leather, sourced from the finest tanneries across Tuscany, Italy.
It ages beautifully over time, developing a unique patina, making it more durable and luxurious than lower-quality leather.
It's also why we developed the leather standards trademark Cuoio Superiore (meaning "superior leather" in Italian).
