Von Baer briefcases combine full-grain Italian leather with solid brass hardware. We chose this combination because bonded leather peels at the stitched edges and plated zinc hardware tarnishes and chips before the leather softens.

Our briefcases use Cuoio Superiore certified Italian full-grain leather, tanned over 48-72 hours, with solid brass hardware from Italian workshops. Our same leather and hardware go into every bag, whether you carry a 14-inch laptop in our slimmest model or a 17-inch in our largest.

Von Baer briefcases combine Cuoio Superiore Italian leather with solid brass hardware from Italian workshops, using vegetable-tanning techniques continuous in Tuscany since 1961. Across the range, our briefcases run between 1.1 kg (2.43 lbs) in our slimmest model and 1.8 kg (3.97 lbs) in our largest, priced from $1,495 to $1,895. Every model ships with the same handles, detachable shoulder strap and trolley sleeve, so the difference between bags is size, internal layout and closure - never material grade.

• Cuoio Superiore Certified Leather: Every briefcase in this range carries Cuoio Superiore certification - an external Italian standard requiring laboratory testing of each leather batch plus on-site audits of the tannery at least every three years by an independent institute. Our audit covers raw-hide source, full-grain status, plant-tannin tanning method and ISO 14001 environmental compliance. We chose third-party certification because self-declared leather grades carry no enforceable standard - just a brand promise.
• Solid Brass Hardware Throughout: Our zippers, locks, key-and-buckle closures and protective base feet are solid brass crafted in Italian workshops, not the plated zinc alloy used as standard at most mid-range prices. We've found hardware is the most common briefcase failure point - plated zinc chips and tarnishes years before the leather softens. We chose brass because it holds its finish across the years the leather takes to develop patina.
• Lighter Across The Range: Every briefcase in this range weighs between 1.1 kg (2.43 lbs) in our slimmest model and 1.8 kg (3.97 lbs) in our largest 17-inch laptop bag. Light enough to ride a shoulder for an hour, not just a city block - even with full-grain leather and solid brass hardware throughout.
• Discreet Brand Markers: Our briefcases carry no logo plate, no metal nameplate, no printed brand name on the leather - just the discreet VB icon debossed into the inside of the leather and the engraved Von Baer mark on the lock and zipper hardware. We press the deboss without ink and engrave the mark on the brass itself. These are quiet brand markers, not public branding.
• Free Personalization Included: Each leather luggage tag takes up to four uppercase initials at no extra charge. Our personalization is hand-applied with heated brass type - blind embossing, no ink, no thread. We include personalization as standard so what's visible on the leather tag is your name, not ours.
• 5-Year Repair Warranty: We back every briefcase with a 5-year limited warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship under normal use. Our remedy is repair-first, with no charge to you. We send repairs back to the family-owned studio that handcrafted the bag - same workshop, same techniques, same stitch pattern as when it was made.

• How do I care for and clean a vegetable-tanned leather briefcase? Treat the leather once a month with Von Baer Premium Leather Cream to maintain suppleness and protect the surface. Wipe away dirt or moisture promptly with a soft cloth. Vegetable-tanned leather naturally develops a patina with use - this deepening of color and character is a feature of the material, not a sign of wear.
• Will a Von Baer briefcase fit in an airline overhead bin or under the seat? We size every briefcase to meet most airline personal item requirements. The slimmest models (Elegant at 8 cm / 3.15 in deep, No.3 at 7.5 cm / 2.95 in deep) fit easily under the seat in front. We recommend checking your specific carrier's guidelines before flying, as requirements vary between airlines.
• What is the difference between full-grain and genuine leather? Full-grain leather uses the complete outer surface of the hide with no sanding or correction - it is the strongest, most durable grade and develops a natural patina over time. 'Genuine leather' is a lower grade made from split or corrected hides that lacks the surface character and longevity of full-grain. We use only full-grain leather across the briefcase range.
